Sorting Out our Learning

As Grade 1s have finished exploring the different types of forces, we now looked back and reflected on our understanding.

We explained 'force' in our own terms.

We picked one force that we are strongly familiar with and explained it to the best that we could.

We sorted out pictures and descriptions and placed them in the right categories.

We also completed the sentence 'If there was no ___________ then...

Now the next question is the big SO WHAT? We learned about these things. Now we will try to make connections. How are these things affecting our lives? How do we use them to be productive?

Types of Forces

This week was a busy week for all of us as we explored the big FIVE types of forces:

GRAVITY

FRICTION

AIR RESISTANCE

MAGNETISM

BUOYANCY

The Grade 1s worked in teams in doing the experiments. They started with pre-experiment where they gave their ideas and prediction of what the experiment results would be. Then they performed the experiments and recorded the results. Afterwards, they compared the outcomes of their prediction and the actual results.

In our class sharing, we dwelt into using the results of the experiments as our basis to explore. The learners shared their findings from documentaries they watched too. We looked into resources to find out explanation and we also reflected on how these forces are useful or not useful in our lives.

Force: Push and Pull and others

This week, we explored the following:

1. What is force?

2. How are pull and push the same different?

3. What are the other types of forces?

4. How does force affect an object?

In our exploration, the Grade 1s showed clear understanding that FORCE is push and pull. They showed different examples of activities that show push and pull. They played a board game sorting out activities that require push force and activities that require pull force.

Some questions also arise. some of them are as follows:

* How do airplanes stay in the air without being pulled down by gravity? Do they work well with gravity that's why they don't fall down?

* Why do boats not sink?

* Are there other forces besides gravity?

* Is there a force even if we are resting or sleeping?

* Why do birds and butterflies fly?

As we are going to use research skills as an approach to learning, we started with using printed resources as our first means to get definition of the following words:

Force

Friction

Gravity

Air Resistance

Magnetism

Bouyant

The Grade 1s worked with their partners to look for the meaning of the words during language class. They also used digital resources from the internet o look for the meanings of the words.

Egg Drop Experiment

This week we are tuning in to the new unit on forces and materials and how they make life easier. As part of our tuning in, we did an egg drop experiment where they have to make sure to protect the egg from cracking when they drop it.

In this activity, they showed sound communication skills as they were asked to explain how they planned to achieve the goal. They also showed good teamwork as everyone was open-minded and enthusiastic to share and try their group members' ideas.

They tested their work. Out of five groups, only one group was able to successfully accomplish their objective.

Their videos will be posted on seesaw to give them also a chance to reflect on their task.
